What is the IEO exam?

The IEO, short for International English Olympiad, is an English competition for school children run by the Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF). Children from class 1 to class 12 answer a multiple-choice paper in their own school. It tests how well a child actually uses English, not literature quotes.

Who runs the IEO?

The Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF), the New Delhi non-profit that also runs the IMO (maths), NCO (cyber) and IGKO (general knowledge). Registration normally happens through the school, once a year.

What does the IEO test?

Practical English rather than literature. The sections are Word and Structure Knowledge (vocabulary and grammar), Reading (comprehension passages), Spoken and Written Expression, and an Achievers Section whose questions carry more marks. Reading habits help more than cramming word lists.

What is the paper pattern?

Multiple choice only, in English, 60 minutes: 35 questions for classes 1 to 4 and 50 for classes 5 to 10. There is no negative marking, so children should attempt every question.

Is there a second level?

Yes, for classes 3 to 12: top performers of level 1 are invited to level 2. Classes 1 and 2 are ranked on level 1 alone.

How should my child prepare?

Read a little every day, then practise topic by topic. The aliensbrain kids Practice Hall English topics are free for classes 1 to 10, from spelling and grammar to reading passages, with explanations after every answer in classes 4 to 10.

35 for classes 1 to 4 and 50 for classes 5 to 10, all multiple choice, in 60 minutes.

Can my child appear in the IEO individually?

Most children appear through their school. SOF has also allowed individual registration in some years; check sofworld.org for the current process.

Is the IEO only for toppers?

No. It is open to every child in a participating school, and the paper rewards steady reading habits more than last-minute preparation.
